Tian Rao had served Ai Gong, King of the State of Lu, for many years, but he was never appointed to any important position.

One day, Tian Rao said to Ai Gong of Lu: "I am going to leave Your Majesty, and fly high and far to distant places like the swan goose."

"What do you mean?" asked Ai Gong.

Tian Rao replied: "Haven't Your Majesty seen a rooster before?

It has a red cockscomb on its head and looks very elegant.

It has sharp claws on its feet and is of martial bearing.

When facing enemies, it is very brave and vigorous and fights to the bitter end.

When it fords food, it will call its pals to enjoy together, and is very kind.

It keeps watch during the night and crows at dawn, never bungles matters and is very honest.

Though the rooster has these five merits, Your Majesty still order your subordinates to cook it for food.

Why is that so? Because it is near to Your Majesty."

Tian Rao paused and then continued: "As to the swan goose, its one flight covers I,000 li.

Sometimes it stops by Your Majesty's pools, and eats your fish and soft-shelled turtles.

Sometimes it stops in Your Majesty's fields and pecks your beans and grains.

Though it does not have the merits of the rooster, Your Majesty still regard it highly because it is far away from you.

Therefore, please permit me to fly high and far to distant places like the swan goose."

Once, the King of the State of Wu wanted to invade the State of Chu.

The King of Wu warned his ministers: "If anyone should dare to dissuade me from invading Chu again, I will put him to death."

One young hanger-on of his wanted to dissuade him but didn't dare.

He carried a slingshot, and for three consecutive days paced up and down in the King's back garden.

The dew wetted his clothes all through.

One day, the King of Wu called him:"The dew has wetted your clothes to such a state.

Why should you bear such hardship?"

The young man replied: "There is a cicada on a tree in this garden.

The cicada is high above, chirping leisurely and taking in the dew freely, not knowing that a mantis is right behind it.

The mantis, pressing its body close in a concealed place, is intent on catching the cicada, not knowing that a siskin is hiding right behind it.

The siskin is stretching out its neck to peck at the mantis, not knowing that a man carrying a slingshot is under it.

These three small creatures make every effort only to get the benefit before them but ignore entirely the disaster behind."

Having heard the young man's words, the King of Wu suddenly saw the light and said: "What you said is right!"

Consequently, the King of Wu dropped his plan to invade the State of Chu.

Ye Gong was well-known for his fondness for dragons:

In the house where he lived, dragons were painted on the walls and carved on the pillars and the four walls of his bedroom.

There were dragons everywhere, up and down, front and back, with each dragon baring its teeth and brandishing its claws.

In the heavens there was a real dragon.

It was very happy to hear that Ye Gong was so fond of dragons.

One day, the sky suddenly darkened, and then came wind, thunder and rain.

The real dragon flew to Ye Gong's home.

It poked its head into the window in the south and coiled its tail to the window in the north, rocking and rattling the whole house.

At the sight of this real dragon, Ye Gong was frightened out of his wits.

He trembled all over and hurriedly hid himself.

So it turned out that what Ye Gong liked was painted and carved fake dragons but not real ones.
