In the past, a man of the State of Chu intended to go to the State of Zheng to sell pearls.

First he used rare lily magnolia to make a small exquisite case which he fumigated with the delicate fragrance of osmanthuses and Chinese prickly ashes. Furthermore, the case was inlaid with emerald-green jadeite, and adorned with attractive rosy jade. The whole case was decorated in an extremely exquisite way.

A man of the State of Zheng saw this exquisite case and liked it very much. He bought it with a great deal of money, but he returned the pearl in the case to the man of Chu.

Later, people ridiculed the man of Chu by saying that he was good at selling cases, but not good at selling pearls.

To go too far in the pursuit of form just like letting a presumptuous guest usurp the host's role, which brings about opposite results.

One day, a guest was making drawings for the King of the State of Qi.

The King of Qi asked him:

"What do you think is the most difficult thing to draw?"

  The guest answered:

"Dogs and horses are the most difficult to draw."

"Then what is the easiest thing to draw?" the King of Qi asked again.

"Ghosts are the easiest to draw," the guest answered. "People are familiar with dogs and horses, which they see every day, so dogs and horses are the most difficult to draw. As to ghosts, no one has ever seen them, so one can draw them any way one likes. Therefore, ghosts are the easiest to draw."

During the Warring States Period, a man was willing to teach the King of Yan the ways to attain immortality.

The King of Yan was very glad when he heard of this, and quickly sent someone to acknowledge the man as master and learn from him. But before the man he sent had a chance to learn, that man died. The man he sent could only return dejectedly.

At this the King of Yan flew into a rage. He rebuked the man for walking too slowly to get there in time, and ordered to have him killed.

The King of Yan never realized that the man who boasted himself as an immortal was deceiving him, but instead, he blamed the man he sent for walking too slowly.
