It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, butmannerson the roads are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men becomemonsters behind the wheel.Itis all very well, again,to have a tiger in the tank, but to have onein the driver's seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog***莽撞駕車者***,the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is theexception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a "Be Kind to OtherDrivers"campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headedand good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected touncivilized behavior. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving thetensions of motoring.A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act ofpoliteness when they see it.

However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who brakesviolently toallow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when afew seconds later the road would be clear anyway;or the man who waves a child across a zebracrossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goesfor encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.It alwaysamazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodiesof these grannies.

A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filtercorrectlyinto traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise tobad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists can't even learn to drive, let alone master thesubtler aspects of roadsmanship.Years age the experts warned us that the car-ownershipexplosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high fime for all ofus to take this message to heart.

  1.[horrible]

  2.[A"Be Kind to Other Drivers"campaign.]

  解析:原文中的get out of hand意為“失控”,與題幹中的get control of“控制”剛好相反。

  3.[the most cool-headed and good-tempered.]

解析:題幹中的control their impulse to相當於原文的resist the temptation to,experience impolite behavior也是原文subjected to uncivilized behavior的同義替換。

  4.[misplaced politeness]

[定位]根據題幹中的encouraging old ladies to cross the road定位到第3段。

原文該段倒數第二句中的The same goes for指的就是這種行為。

  5.[the car-ownership explosion]

Years ago the experts warned對應題幹中的Experts have long pointed out,而be ready to yield toeach other是原文中demand a lot more give-and-take的同義替換,故原文該句that從句中的主語the car-ownership explosion部分即為答案。
