  篇一

  A Cheap Meal

  一頓便宜的飯

  A man went into a restaurant and sat down at one of the tables.

  一個男人走近一家餐廳在一張桌前坐下來。

  A waiter went up to him and gave him the menu.

  一個服務員走過來,把選單地給了他。

  The man read it carefully,

  這個人仔細地看著,

  then ordered all of the most expensive dishes.

  然後點了所有最貴的菜。

  The waiter served the meal and the man ate it with great enjoyment.

  服務員端來了菜,他高興地享用著。

  Then a small boy came into the restaurant and sat at the man's table.

  過了一會兒,一個小男孩來到餐廳,坐在這個人的桌前。

  The waiter came up and said to the man,"What would your little boy like,sir"

  服務員走過來問這個人"您的小孩想要點什麼,先生?"

  "Oh,just an ice cream," the man told him.

  "哦,就來個冰淇淋吧。"那人告訴他。

  Then he stood up and said to the waiter,"I'm just going out to buy a newspaper."

  然後那人站起來對服務員說:"我出去買一份報紙。"

  He left the restau- rant.The waiter gave the boy an ice cream

  他走出餐廳,服務員給男孩拿來了冰淇淋。

  The boy ate it,and then stood up and walked to the door.

  男孩吃完後,站起來向門口走去。

  The waiter ran towards him.

  服務員向他跑來,

  "Excuse me,"he said,"but your father hasn't come back

  "請原諒,"他說,"你的父親還沒有回來,

  and he hasn't paid for his meal or for your ice cream."

  而且他還沒有為你的飯和你的冰淇淋買單。"

  "I'm sorry,"the young boy said,"that has nothing to do with me."

  "對不起,"小男孩說,"這和我沒關係。"

  "Oh,yes it does," the waiter said,

  "哦,不,"服務員說,

  "you will stay here until your father comes back and pays his bill."

  "你應該等到你父親回來付完錢。"

  "He's not my father" the boy said."I don't know who he is."

  "他不是我的父親。"男孩說,"我不知道他是誰。"

  The waiter did not understand."What do you mean?"he asked.

  服務員不明白,問道:"那你是什麼意思?"

  "The man came up to me in the street," the boy said.

  "我在街上遇見這人,"男孩說,

  "He asked me if I liked ice cream.I told him I did.

  他問我是否喜歡冰淇淋。我告訴他我喜歡。

  Then he told me to come into the restaurant at 2 o'clock

  然後他讓我在兩點鐘的時候來餐廳找他,

  and sit down at his table.He said he'd give me some."

  Mr.Knott was a teacher.He taught in a big school in London.

  He lived a long way from the school,

  so he was usually quite tired when he got home.

  所以到家時,他總覺得很累。

  At nine o'clock one evening,when he was in bed,

  the telephone rang in the hall of his small house,so he went down stairs,

  "This is White bridge 3165. Who's speaking, please?"

  "Watt,"a man answered.

  "What's your name, please?" Said Mr. Knott."Watt's my name,"was the answer

  "Yes,I asked you that,What's your name?" Mr. Knott said again.

  "是的,我問你叫什麼名字?"諾特又問了一次。

  "I told you.Watt's my name," Said the other man."Are you Jack Smith?"

  "我告訴你了,瓦特是我的名字。"對方再一次回答。"你是傑克史密斯嗎?"

  "No.I'm Knott," answered Mr.Knott.

  "不,我是諾特。"諾特回答。

  "Will you give your name,please?"Said Mr.Watt."Will Knott" answered Mr.Knott.

  "能告訴我你的名字嗎?"瓦特先生問道。"好,諾特。"諾特先生答道。

  Both Mr.Watt and Mr.Knott put their telephones down angrily and thought,

  A Different Kind of Audience

  Al Smith was governor of New York States. He was a famous man.

  He was born very poor on the East Side of New York City.

  他出生在紐約市東部的一個窮苦家庭。

  He had little education.He worked very hard and won great success.

  他讀書不多,但是他工作勤奮,終於獲得了很大的成就。

  One day,as governor, he was visiting the state prison at Sing Sing.

  有一天,作為州長,他訪問星星州的監獄。

  Sing Sing is one of the largest prisons in the United States

  星星監獄是全國最大的監獄之一。

  asked Mr.Smith to say something to the prisoners.

  請史密斯對囚犯們說幾句話。

  Mr.Smith had never spoken to this kind of audience before.

  史密斯先生從來沒有對這一類聽眾講過話。

  He did not know how to begin.

  他不知道該怎樣開口。

  Finally,he said,"My fellow citizens..."

  最後,他說:"我親愛的公民們......"

  Then he remembered that when a man goes to prison he is no longer a citizen.

  接著他想起一個人蹲進監獄就不再是公民了。

  He began again."My fellow prisoners..." That did not sound right,so he said,

  他重新開始:"我親愛的囚犯們......"那聽起來也不對勁兒,於是他說:

  "Well,anyway,I'm glad to see so many of you here today."

  "噢,無論如何,今天在這兒見到你們這麼多人真是太高興了。"
