　　1. 虛擬語氣用法一例

　　有這樣一個句子：I would be grateful if you could give us some advice.

　　【用法說明】

　　此句的主語和從句都用了虛擬語氣，以使說話者的語氣變得委婉和圓滑。句中的 if you could… 也可說成 if you would…;句中的 I would be… 也可說成 I should be…。有的詞典也將 I would be… if you could [would]… 視為一種語氣比較委婉的固定句式。又如：

　　I’d be grateful if you would let me know soon. 你如果肯及早告訴我，我將感激不盡。

　　I would be very grateful if you would make the arrangements for me. 如果您能為我安排一下，我將不勝感激。

　　We should be grateful if you would be so kind as to let us have your cheque as soon as possible. 如蒙儘早將支票交來，我們將不勝感激。

　　有時也可將條件從句置於句首。如：

　　If Ann would admit this I’d be quite happy. 如果安肯承認這一點我會很高興。

　　grateful 與 thankful 用法有所不同：前者含義較具體，通常用於人們在得到好處、恩惠、善待等情況下表達的感激之情;後者含義較抽象，含有感謝上帝、運氣、命運等意味，有類似於漢語的“謝天謝地”之意，主要用於表示人們因避開了危險或結束了不愉快的經歷等的寬慰心情。比較：

　　I’m very grateful ***to you*** for all your help. 非常感謝你的一切幫助。

　　I’m thankful to know that he’s safe. 得知他很安全，我感到很欣慰。

　　有這樣一個句子：I’m sorry you are having trouble in making friends.
