  ***Good Manners***

  Good manners are very important in the communication of daily life. Everyone likes a person with good manners. But what are good manners? How does one know what should do and what should not do when trying to be a good - mannered person?

  Well, here are some common examples. A person with good manners never laughs at a people in trouble. Instead, he ***she*** always tries to consult or offer help to the person. When he ***she*** takes a bus and sees an old man or a sick man, he ***she*** always gives his ***her*** seat to him. He doesn‘t interrupt other people when they are talking. He uses a handkerchief when he sneezes or coughs. He does not spite in public places.

  Ideas of what are good manners are not always the same in different regions. For example, people in Western countries usually kiss each other to show their greetings, whereas in China, kissing in public is something of unusual and sometimes be regarded as impolite to somebody else. So it is important to know what is regarded as polite and impolite before you go to a region. But remember that it is always right to be kind and helpful to others.

  For thousands of years, physical activity has been associated with health. Today, science has confirmed the link, with overwhelming evidence that people who lead active lifestyles are less likely to die early, or to experience major illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer.

  Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind. Exercising causes the body to produce endorphins, chemicals that lead a person to feel peaceful and happy. Exercise can help some people sleep better. It can also help with mental health issues such as mild depression and self-esteem. Plus, exercise can give people a real sense of accomplishment and pride at having achieved a certain goal - like beating an old time in the 100-meter dash.

  Exercising can help you look better, too. People who exercise burn calories and look more toned than those who don‘t. In fact, exercise is one of the most important parts of keeping your body at a healthy weight. When you exercise, you burn food calories as fuel. If a person eats more calories than he or she burns, the body stores them away as fat. Exercise can help burn these stored calories.

  Finally, exercising to maintain a healthy weight also decreases a person‘s risk of developing certain diseases, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

  ***Fatigue and Rest***

  Fatigue and Rest Scientists have made an interesting experiment about fatigue. When a muscle in the body works, it produces lactic acid, and it is this lactic that makes the muscle tired. Fatigue is not just a chemical process, it is also a biologi cai process.

  We can‘t just "remove" fatigue;we must allow the cells of the body to rest. Damages must be repaired, nerve cells of the ain must be "recharged," the joints of the body must replace used up lubricants. Sleep will always be necessary as a way of restoring the body‘ s energy after fatigue. However, a person who has been working hard at his desk for hours may not want to lie down at all when he is tired. He‘d rather takea walk!

  Or when children come home from school they want to run out to play... not to lie down and rest. The reason is that if only a certain part of the body is tried the best way to make that part feel fresh again is to make other parts of the body active! We can actually rest by means of activity. Of course, if you are totally exhausted, the best thing to do is to go to sleep!

  The graph above shows the fluctuations in the number of students recelvlng scholarships in an eight-year period. As is shown in the graph, the number of scholarships given rose each year between 1986 and 1993.

  In 1986, there were only about 50 students receiving scholarships. But the number of scholarships given kept growing until 1993. By that year there were more than 500 scholarships given, an increase nearly by 9 times over that in 1986. However, beginning in 1993, the number decreased. What followed was a sharp decline in the number. In 1994,there were only a little more than 400 students being granted scholarships. The steady increase in the number of students receiving scholarships in the eight-year period might be caused by many factors, such as steady increase in economy, government‘s emphasis on education and more private donations to the universities.

  What caused the sharp decline in 1994 is hard to say. Financial problems were probably one of the causes for that.

  ***Introduction to Iceland***

  Iceland‘s stark, pristine scenery has been shaped by fire and ice: More than 200 volcanoes and numerous glaciers form the country‘s landscape. It‘s a frozen land that‘s always letting off steam. Its U-shaped valleys, jagged lava fields, monstrous icecaps, hot springs and geysers have carved a rugged, bizarre landscape you won‘t see anywhere else on Earth. But you don‘t need the fortitude of a Viking to enjoy Iceland. In fact, you can experience many of its extremes in relative comfort. During a recent trip, we swam outdoors in a naturally heated pool just yards/meters away from a glacier.

  Despite its relative isolation and untillable terrain, Iceland has one of the highest standards of living in the world ***with sky-high prices to match***. Tourists began to flock there in the 1990s, realizing that it‘s actually a destination in its own right rather than just a long layover on connecting Icelandair flights.

  Icelanders, like many islanders, are self-confident and reserved, but once you break the ice, so to speak, they are among the friendliest in the world. Of course, they, too, have their extremes. Although weeknights in Reykjavik, the capital city, are usually quite sedate, the wee hours during the weekends ***particularly Friday nights*** can get downright raucous as stylishly dressed young people observe a rowdy party-on-the-streets ritual known as the runtur, or circuit.
