APardon me. Could you please pass me the tissue?

  BSure, here you are.

AThanks, I didn't expect the dish to be so spicy. Are you ok?

BYeah, I think the food is alright, it's not too spicy though it's a little salty for me. But you are Chinese, you should have known better.

AWell, not every Chinese can handle spicy food in the way people from Sichuan and Guizhou provinces can. Back where I come from, people don't eat a lot of peppers and chillies.

BOh, I see how this food can be really hard for you. I can sympathize with that. I stayed in Sichuan for a year. The food was difficult at the beginning. Every dish was so spicy. After a while though, I got used to the taste, and now I won't consider anything a real dish if it isn't spicy.

AYeah, you can increase you tolerance for spicy food, but so far, I haven't had the need or the opportunity. Every time I try spicy food, it is a total disaster for my nose and eyes.

BI completely understand. I didn't intend on liking spicy food at first either, but when you have no other choices, you've got to adapt.

AYeah, I guess that's a typical example of 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do.'

  BExactly.

AMatthew, do you know much about body language in countries around the world?

BSure, I've picked up a few things from travelling around for work. Why?

AWell, I had a meeting today with a woman from Japan and she wouldn't stop bowing! I didn't know what to do!

  BDid you bow back?

ANo, I tried to shake her hand, but her hand was so limp I was a bit offended.

BWell, Japanese businessmen and women typically bow to greet each other in Japan. She might have been offended by your strong handshake.

ABut she was in America! Shouldn't she have known that strong handshakes in America signify confidence and respect?

BThings are different in Japan. You know, in some countries, making eye contact with others is considered rude.

AIs that why she wouldn’t look at me in the meeting?

BI think it's highly possible, yes.

AThe meeting really didn’t go down well at all. I think I need to read up about intercultural communication before I have another meeting with someone from another country.

BThat's a good idea. When you don’t know much about other cultures, the simplest thing can offend someone.

AThat's so true. It's great that we see eye to eye on this.
