  春秋末年,大將範吉射一家因被追殺,只好逃離晉國。一天,有個人在範家的門口發現了一口鐘,很漂亮,於是便想要把它偷走。可是鐘太重了,他根本不能揹走它。過了一會兒,他想出了一個主意:鐘不是太重嗎?那就把它敲碎,一塊一塊地搬走不就行了嗎?於是,他很得意地找來一個鐵錘,用盡全身力氣砸向大鐘。“當——”,鍾發出了震耳欲聾的響聲。因為這鐘是銅澆鑄而成的,自然是一點也沒破損。他又猛力砸了一下,鍾仍然發出很大響聲,只稍微晃了幾下,完好無損。這時他突然意識到,如果再繼續砸下去,這“噹噹”的聲響被人聽到,就偷不了鍾了。他自以為聰明,又想出了個辦法:捂住自己的耳朵再砸。這就是成語掩耳盜鈴的意思,這則成語諷刺了這種自欺欺人的愚蠢行為。那麼為什麼後來鍾變成了鈴呢?這是由於在古時,鍾和鈴都是樂器,所以後人將“掩耳盜鐘”演變為“ 掩耳盜鈴”。
