The 'You' is a kind of wild animal which is by nature extremely suspicious.

Whenever it hears a sound, it immediately becomes afraid, suspecting that there is a hunternearby who is trying to catch it, or another animal that wants to harm it. It runs up into a tree and hides, peeking out its head and scanning all around.

After a while it climbs back down, looking here and looking there.

Only when it is sure that there is nothing around does it finally begin to relax.

But then pretty soon, it will again grow afraid, and running up into a tree, begin the sameroutine all over again.

Time and time again, the 'You' repeats this, with the result that it spends half of its day running up and down trees, and wastes a lot of energy.

So, when someone is very hesitant, and cannot make a decision, others often say of this person that 'the 'You' cannot decide."

In the Spring and Autumn Period ***春秋時期,770-476 BC***, there was a beauty in the State of Yue called Xishi ***西施***.

She often suffered from pains in her chest, and so she would often walk around doubled over and with her brows knitted.

There was an ugly girl in the village called Dongshi who envied Xishi.

Striving to emulate Xishi, she imitated her stoop, knitting her brows at the same time.

She thought that this made her elegant, but in fact, it only made her more ugly.

Later, this idiom came to be used to indicate improper imitation that produces the reverseeffect.

In the Eastern Han Dynasty ***東漢***, there was a man named Chen Shi ***陳寔*** .

One day, a thief slipped into his living-room. Hiding behind the beam, the thief waited for Chen Shi to fall asleep.

Chen Shi, finding the thief, called his family together, saying, "To be a upright man one must have aspirations. Men are not born evil. But if one gets used to doing evil things, it will be hard to reform. The gentleman above the beam is such a man."

The thief, hearing this, hurriedly jumped down and knelt on the ground to beg forgiveness.

This idiom is used to refer to a thief.
