  An Unfamiliar Beach

  1

  The sails have been lowered.

  A winter forest of masts

contains unexpected sights and sounds of Spring.

  2

  The ruins of a lighthouse

still hold the great beams from the past.

You lean on the remaining stairs,

  on the rusted banisters,

beating the same rhythm over and over.

  3

In the dignity of high noon

our shadows look for temporary lodging.

  All over the place

  salt rock glistens, condensed and

  sparkling with memories.

  4

  In the distance

there is a vast, white expanse.

  The blue horizon

  is like a moving deck.

How many nets have been cast?

  5

  A scarf,

  like a red bird,

waves over the Sea of Japan.

It flings its imitation of fire

at this grey end of the world,

  and at your fixed gaze.

An absence of storms is fine,

but there is also no direction and no wind.

Perhaps in answer to a call,

its wings thrum like a bowstring.

  6

  The ebbing tide

  wave after wave,

  spills on a golden carpet,

spills a night suffused with foam,

a lost rope, a broken oar.

  Fishermen bend their naked backs

and repair the temple the storm collapsed.

  7

  Children chase a crescent moon.

A sea gull flies right for you,

but doesnt light on your outstretched hand.

  The last romantic

Time went away, and left him lingering

The last romantic in a little town

  He drowses in the twilight,fingering

A scrap of muslin from on antique gown

Old odors find his nostrils when he drowses:

  Cedar,Amontillado,lavender ;

And white facades of stately Georgian houses

Grow in the air to make a frame for her

  She have been dead for thirty years or more ;

And been could she come, eyes glistening,

He would not hear her fingers strike the door :

He has gone deaf from too much listening

He has gone deaf, and time has gone away

The oleander flowers soon will pass

His julep stands forgotten on a tray

And "pickwick" sprawls forlornly on the grass

Over the garden drifts a scent of musk

And in the fringes of the fading light

Round hills, like lonely opals in the dusk

Deepen to purple, and are one with night

  Song of the True Self

  By Walt Whitman

  ***originally in English***

Swiftly arose and spread around me the peace and knowledge

that pass all the art and argument of the earth,

And I know that the hand of God is the elder hand of my own,

And I know that the spirit of God is the eldest brother of my own,

And that all the men ever born are also my brothers

.....and the women my sisters and lovers,

And that a kelson* of the creation is love.

And limitless are leaves stiff or drooping in the fields,

And brown ants in the little wells beneath them,

And mossy scabs of the worm fence, and heap'd stones, and elder,

  and mullein and poke-weed.
