Exchanging the Ox for a Sheep以羊易牛

One day, seated in the ancestral hall, King Hui of Liang saw a man leading an ox pass by. He asked:

"Where are you taking the ox?"

The man leading the ox stopped and answered:

"I am taking it to be slaughtered and will use its blood to paint the bell."

As King Hui heard this, he felt pity for the ox and said:

"How can that be done? You are too cruel. Let it go at once. It is not guilty. How can you kill it? I cannot bear to see it panic-stricken, shedding tears and trembling before its death."

The man leading the ox asked:

"Do you mean that I shall let the ox go and not paint the bell? Is that it?"

  King Hui answered:

"What are you saying? How can you not paint the bell! Let the ox go, but use a sheep instead."

Those Who Flee 50 Steps Laugh at Those Who Fle 100 Steps五十步笑百步

One day, King Hui of Liang met Mencius and said:

"What a mess the political state of our neighbouring countries is in! When they govern their states, they never think of the people. But when there is a flood in Henei, I move the victims of the calamity to Hedong. When there is a calamity in Hedong, I move the people there to Henei. I also allocate them food for calamity relief. I have really done my best to govern my country."

As Mencius heard this, he nodded in agreement.

King Hui of Liang went on to say:

"Yet my population has not increased and our neighbouring countries' population has not decreased. Tell me, what exactly is the reason?"

Mencius thought this over and replied:

"Your Majesty likes wars. Please allow me to use war as an analogy. On the battlefield, the sound of fighting shakes the heavens. The two armies are locked in a stalemate, but there is surely to be either victory or defeat. The defeated soldiers, throwing away their helmets and armour, flee for their lives. Some of them flee 50 steps and then stop, while others flee 100 steps and stop. Then, those who flee 50 steps laugh at those who flee 100 steps for their cowardice. Your Majesty, do you think it is right to laugh?"

Upon hearing this, King Hui struck the table and said:

"Of course not. No matter whether they flee 50 steps or 100 steps, they are deserters just the same."

  Mencius smiled and said:

"Your Majesty, since you understand this truth, you can notexpect your population to be larger than that of your neighbouring countries."

What's the Good of Talking Much多言何益

One day, Zi Qin asked his master Mo Zi:

"Master, is there any good at all of talking much?"

Mo Zi thought for a while, and answered:

"If one talks too much, what good is there?"

  Then, he told Zi Qin:

"Toads and frogs croak and flies buzz day and night until they are parched and dry in the mouth, yet nobody listens to them. But a rooster in a chicken coop crows only a few times at dawn, and everyone knows that when it crows, daylight,is coming and the whole world will be awakened. Therefore, there is no use talking too much. What is important is to suit the words to the occasion, and say things which hit the nail on the head."
