  一

Look, how big the pyramid of Khufu is!

Yes. It`s magnificent. The tour guide told us that more than two million stone blocks were used to build it, weighing an average of 2.5 tons each.

How did the ancient Egyptians do that? 4,000 years ago there was no machinery. How could they move such enormous blocks to build such a huge pyramid?

During the annual flood of the Nile, the stone blocks were floated down the river on barges to the construction site.

How did they lift those huge blocks to make such a tall structure?

Ramps were built and extended around the pyramid and used as the road to drag up the blocks. When the pyramid was done, they took the ramps away. Susan, do you know who built the pyramid?

I`ve heard that the pyramids were built by the pharaoh`s slaves.

It isn`t really correct. The pyramids were built by skilled workers, and the unemployed farmers also came to work during the flood season.

Were they forced to build the pyramid?

Some history books said they were, but research says "No". It was considered a religious duty because the people believed that the pharaoh was Sun God living on earth. If his corpse was not preserved, the pharaoh could not enjoy life after death.

Oh, so people were not forced to build the pyramid!

In fact they were proud to do the work.

  Sounds interesting!

Hello, Michelle! I`m going to Sydney on vacation with my family next week. I heard that it is your hometown.

Yes, it is. Sydney is a very beautiful city that is really worth visiting. What are you planning to do on the trip?

The first thing I will do is to visit the Sydney Opera House. I`ve seen some pictures and I think the architecture is out of this word!

That`s true. It looks like a boat with huge white sails floating in the harbor. It`s a beautiful sight surrounded by the clear blue sky and sea. What a magical place to enjoy a concert!

We`ve planned to watch a performance there. What show do you recommend?

There`re a variety of shows. I`m not sure about what will be on during your visit. You`d better check the program schedule on its website.

All right. Are there any other interesting places?

Why not go to the Australian Reptile Park where you can see many strange looking animals that are native only to Australia. You can also take a train ride to the outside of Sydney to visit animal parks that have koala bears and kangaroos running freely in

Oh, I love koalas because they are so cute. I will surly go to those parks. By the way, where can we taste some delicious food?

Hmm-Let me see. I think you should go to the Hawkesbury River. This region has fabulous fresh seafood restaurants. But that`s not the best part.

I can`t imagine what could be better than tasting delicious fresh fish, prawns and crab.

Well, you can try your hand at catching your own lunch! There`re boats and fishing equipment to rent and places to buy your bait.

Really? That sounds like a fun way to have a meal!

Oh, and you must visit Sydney`s "Old Town". The century-old buildings have been renovated into tourist attractions. There you can take a step back into history when you explore the founding of Sydney.

I hear Canada is a very mountainous country.

Yes. In the west is the famous Rocky Mountains.

Aren`t they part of the chain that stretches all the way down America?

That`s right. In the east, mountains stretch down the coast of Canada, too.

What is the middle of Canada like?

The central provinces are a vast plan.

  Is the north hilly?

Not in the center. It is full of lakes, rivers and low vegetation resting on permafrost.

  Does that mean permanent ice?

Yes, about three feet below the surface of the ground is frozen.
